Classic car dream comes true for man living with Huntington’s

A man living in Worcestershire has fulfilled one of his lifelong ambitions to spend an afternoon driving around the Malvern Hills in a beautiful classic sports car, despite living with a complex neurological condition.

Mark, 59, who is a resident at the Inspire Neurocare service in Worcester, asked if it would be possible to make his wish come true after seeing a Morgan sports car at his friend Neil’s wedding and on a subsequent trip to the Morgan car factory café.

Although Mark, who lives with Huntington’s disease, has limited language he was able to say to his wife Sue, “Morgan, drive and Neil”, after he saw the classic convertible up close on his visit to the Malvern factory.

The care team at Inspire and Sue then went about seeing if it would be possible to make Mark’s dream a reality – and the Morgan Motor Company were only too happy to help out.

Sue explained how the magical day panned out: “Following an earlier risk assessment the Morgan car arrived at Inspire and Mark hit the road, sweeping through the Malvern Hills and along the Guarlford Straight.

“The car was perfect for Mark because the low bucket seats kept him secure and the small windscreen meant he could have a great view of the road and the beautiful countryside. Normally he sits in the back of our car, so this was a real thrill.”

In Mark’s own words it was “Quick” and Good”!

Sue thanked the team at Inspire for helping making the hour-long classic car trip possible.

She said: “The wonderful team at Inspire are always thinking how they can make things happen for Mark, they don’t come from a perspective of making his world smaller and smaller – quite the opposite. This attitude of positive risk taking is giving Mark experiences he would not otherwise get, and that is so lovely to see.”

Maxine Farr, the Physiotherapist at Inspire, said: “It is such a pleasure to help make Mark’s wishes come true. It takes a lot of planning and preparation, but we see possibilities not limitations, and that’s what makes this job so special.”

Next up for Mark he’s planning to take a trip on the Severn Valley Steam Railway later this month as part of his year-long 60th birthday celebrations.
