Inside the neuro-rehab centre transforming spinal injury recovery

HCA Healthcare UK’s Neuro Rehab Centre sees many patients living with spinal cord injuries.
Mandy shares how the team at the centre combines innovative technology with compassionate, patient-centred care to support recovery.
Our team here at The Wellington Hospital supports patients at all stages of their journey, from early rehabilitation to ongoing, long-term care.
With a strong multidisciplinary team (MDT), we provide personalised, patient-centred support tailored to each person’s goals, including a dedicated spinal cord injury team.”
Some of the services we offer include gait retraining thanks to innovative robotic technology such as the Indego® exoskeleton and the Lokomat® which both often helps our patients take steps for the first time since their injury.
We also offer specialised clinics such as our Complex Posture and Seating Team, who work closely with patients to assess and provide the most suitable wheelchair, whether that means additional support, a more active chair, or power add-ons to help with independence.
Then we have our Spasticity Clinic, where patients receive tailored support to manage spasticity and spasms.
This includes use of our Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bike for upper and lower limb muscle strength, tailored standing programmes to support bone and soft tissue health and regulation of autonomic function, and Botox treatment where appropriate.
Accessibility is a priority for us, which is highlighted in our gym space with the Equalizer (a multi-gym designed for wheelchair users by a wheelchair user) and an adaptable kitchen to help patients gain independence in tasks they would need when returning home.
Our priority is to deliver client-centred care that empowers people with spinal cord injury to achieve their goals and live meaningful, fulfilling lives.
