PLG were appointed to transform a rural property into a fully accessible, future-proofed home for a young client living with cerebral palsy.
At 17, she uses a wheelchair full time and requires 24-hour care, so the space needed to support every element of her daily life — from personal care and therapy, to education, family life and rest.
The design had to include a dedicated living area for her, plus a carer suite, and ensure level access throughout. As always, the goal was not only to meet clinical needs, but to create a warm, welcoming home that empowers independence and supports family life.
The Challenge
The project presented significant hurdles from the outset.
The house had been unoccupied for some time, and during that period, squatters had taken over the annexe. Inside, a burst pipe had caused major water damage throughout the kitchen and rear of the home, requiring extensive remedial works before the main project could even begin.
Externally, the sloping garden and multi-level terrain meant significant groundworks were needed to achieve level access — a critical part of the brief. Early works also uncovered two old swimming pools, one of which had been missed in the original survey.
Both had to be carefully excavated and structurally covered over, including the installation of a block and beam system, before building work on the new extension could proceed.
The Solution
The heart of this project was a brand-new single-storey extension tailored to meet the complex and evolving needs of our young client and her care team.
The new space includes a fully accessible bedroom, wet room with wall-mounted shower trolley, height-adjustable bath, and ceiling track hoists throughout the care areas — including the lounge.

She now has her own lounge, kitchen and therapy room, allowing her greater independence and privacy while staying connected to the rest of the family. A separate carer’s suite, complete with its own ensuite, ensures 24-hour care can be delivered comfortably and discreetly.
Externally, the extension’s roofline was extended to provide shelter for safe vehicle transfers in all weather conditions, while extensive landscaping works ensured continuous level access from front to back.
To support her younger siblings, we installed secure perimeter fencing, automated gates and CCTV — giving the family peace of mind that everyone is safe and secure at home.
The Result
This is a home that now works — not just for care, but for life.
From a structurally challenging and weather-damaged shell, we’ve delivered a calm, accessible and family-focused space that empowers our young client with choice, independence and dignity.

What was once a property full of barriers is now a fully adapted, future-ready home, designed around the complex needs of a young woman who deserves the freedom to thrive.
