Neurokinex community raises £22,500 to support people with spinal cord injuries

Members of the Neurokinex community living with spinal cord injuries, their families and supporters have successfully raised over £22,500 through its annual Step Up Challenge to help newly injured people access specialist rehabilitation and support.
The fundraising challenge brought together the Neurokinex community across its three centres in Bristol, Hemel Hempstead and Gatwick from September 7th to 12th, with participants taking on a series of physical challenges in support of the charity’s Step Up Scheme.
A key part of this year’s challenge saw Neurokinex Director Jo Godfrey walk 201 miles between the charity’s three centres.
Across the challenge, Neurokinex individuals collectively matched Jo’s distance, demonstrating the strength of the community and the different ways people can contribute to a shared goal.
People took on the challenge in ways that reflected their own abilities and stages of rehabilitation, including walking, pushing, rowing, cycling and ski erg challenges.
The wider Neurokinex community also came together for the final stage of the challenge at the Twilight Runway Challenge at Blackbushe Airport, completing distances including 3km, 5km and 10km.
The challenge brought together people of all ages, including children as young as six, alongside family members and supporters. Meanwhile, their trainers were with them every step of the way.
The £22,500 raised ensures Neurokinex can continue providing its Step Up Scheme, which offers six free one-hour rehabilitation sessions to people who have recently sustained a spinal cord injury.
Each award costs the charity £500 to provide, helping newly injured people access specialist therapy and connect with a community who understand what they are going through.
Kate Thornton-Jones, fundraising director at Neurokinex, said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part in this year’s Step Up Challenge and helped us raise more than £22,500.
“What makes the challenge so special is seeing the whole Neurokinex community come together, with everyone contributing in their own way.
“From clients completing distances during their rehabilitation sessions to families and supporters taking part at the Twilight Runway, it was brilliant to see everyone working towards the same goal.
“Raising this money will make a real difference to our Step Up Scheme and help us give newly injured people the opportunity to access specialist rehabilitation and meet others who understand what they are going through. Thank you to everyone who took part, donated and supported the challenge.”
