Tyne Grange rated outstanding

A complex needs care home in Newcastle upon Tyne – Tyne Grange – has been rated as outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in its first inspection.

Tyne Grange is now among the top 3.5 per cent of care homes in England which have achieved this rating.

It becomes Exemplar Health Care’s fourth outstanding care home, alongside Fairwinds, Greenside Court and Dearnevale.

Tyne Grange received the regulator’s highest rating in the Caring and Well-led key lines of enquiry, and ‘Good’ in Safe, Effective and Responsive, giving the home an overall ‘Outstanding’ rating.

“People were exceptionally well supported”

“People were exceptionally well supported and treated with dignity and respect,” the CQC report noted.

“We received consistently positive feedback about the caring nature of staff and their empathetic approach.

“People constantly referred to the trust, kindness, understanding and sensitivity to their individual needs as reasons why they felt the service was exceptional. Several people told us, it was the “Best place they had lived at.”” added the CQC report.

Going the extra mile

The report also highlighted numerous examples of where staff had gone the extra mile to provide exceptionally caring and compassionate support.

CQC reported: “[Staff] worked tirelessly with people to improve their wellbeing and quality of life. For example, a person, previously confined to a wheelchair was being supported to walk independently. The person said, “We’re having a party when I’ve managed to walk over the Millennium Bridge in Newcastle.””

This quote comes from resident, Karen, who has lived at the home since it opened in 2020.

Karen had a spinal cord injury eight years ago which resulted in quadriplegia. With 1:1 support from our care team, and input from the therapy team at Tyne Grange, Karen’s movement has improved significantly.

She has progressed from requiring a full hoist to being able to walk using a walking frame. She has set herself the challenge of walking over the Millennium Bridge.

“Absolutely delighted”

“We are absolutely delighted,” said Sam Cottam, commissioning home director at Tyne Grange.

“The team at Tyne Grange absolutely deserve this recognition. Their team work, commitment and dedication astounds us every day.

“The care team go over and above to make every day better for the service users who live in our home. They live and breathe our values – most importantly, fun!

“We are proud of every single member of the team – without whom we would not have achieved this.”
