Brain injury survivors produce first-of-its-kind art book

A first-of-its-kind digital art book has been created to celebrate the artistic talent of those affected by brain injury, and to inspire and give hope to survivors everywhere.
The Silverlining Brain Injury Charity has produced its Let Your Heart Shine book, which brings together a collection of art to enable survivors to share their creations and stories.
Supported by law firm Slater + Gordon, the book is now available to download in digital form, and will help to generate vital funds for the charity.
The Silverlining offers opportunities for all those affected by brain injury – known as Silverliners – to get involved in engaging and purposeful activities in the community.
People living with brain injuries are supported by the charity alongside their family members and friends, who are often overlooked despite the effects brain injury can have on loved ones.
Dr Sherrie Baehr, founder of the charity, explained the inspiration behind the book.
“Since the pandemic, the charity has pivoted to provide a host of online activities to inspire and support,” she said.
“Inspiring others to find what makes their hearts happy, connected and fulfilled is central to Silverlining. The ‘Let Your Heart Shine’ digital art book is meant to help others find what makes their heart shine.
“The book hopes to illustrate our amazing Silverliners’ stories and inspire through sharing what makes their hearts shine. The Silverlining is incredibly grateful to Slater and Gordon for giving us the chance to shine.”
The Silverlining runs free and low-cost activities and events in the community encouraging members to reconnect, grow and discover something new.
All activities are open to adults of all abilities with the belief that disability should never be a barrier to personal achievement. They promote the ability to rediscover a sense of purpose, social structure and added meaning to survivors’ lives.
Will Cornwell, principal lawyer at Slater + Gordon, said: “Slater + Gordon is extremely proud to support The Silverlining Brain Injury Charity in the online publication of the inaugural digital artbook.
“The Silverlining is a charity dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of those affected by brain injury. It achieves that aim by enabling its ‘Silverliners’ to participate in purposeful activities, which in turn provides the Silverliners with fulfilment, structure, friendships and a whole lot more.
“The artbook showcases in the most inspiring way the breadth of activities which the charity offers, and the talent of the many Silverliners who have contributed to the project. It also gives a little window into the lives of some of the Silverliners, each of whom has their own story to tell.
“And importantly, the ‘Let Your Heart Shine’ theme reflects the positivity and love which the charity somehow infuses into all of its activities and ventures.
“It’s a real pleasure to see the joy that producing this artbook has given to its talented contributors, and we very much hope that it will inspire others with acquired brain injuries to reach out and join the ever-growing band of Silverliners.
“Slater + Gordon is a passionate supporter of those affected by brain injury and their families, with expert advice and guidance throughout any legal process they might face.”
The charity has support groups across the country including London, the West Midlands, Oxford, Bristol and Bath, Surrey, Cardiff, East Sussex, and Brighton.
Membership is free, as is their weekly Sunshine Call service, which is offered to all, to check in on members and offer support on a weekly basis. The charity also provides in-person activities and hybrid options to help members stay connected.
