Listen: Football, CTE and protecting the players of tomorrow

In the new episode of the NR Times Podcast, host Stephanie Price speaks with Dr Judith Gates, founder of Head Safe Football – a UK charity born from a promise made to her late husband, former Middlesbrough footballer Bill Gates, who spent the final 13 years of his life living with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Dr Gates opens up about Bill’s diagnosis, his dying wish to protect future players and how that promise led her to build a movement focused on education, awareness and prevention.

Together they explore what CTE is, why it’s being called a public health crisis in football, the link between repetitive heading and irreversible brain damage and what clubs, coaches and parents can do right now to reduce risk.
