Spinal Injuries Association ‘I Didn’t Plan on This’ podcast has won podcast/audio campaign of the year at the UK Content Awards.
The awards shine a spotlight on the most innovative, impactful, and creative content campaigns across the country.
The podcast series, released in February 2026 by Spinal Injuries Association (SIA), was created to give voice and visibility to people whose lives are shaped, directly or indirectly, by spinal cord injury (SCI).
Every two hours someone in the UK sustains a spinal cord injury: it can happen to anyone at any time with devastating consequences for them and their loved ones.
The podcast was hosted by Gary Dawson and Zoe Fox who without filter, shared some of the tough challenges they face every single day.
Podcast host Zoe Fox said,
“It is fantastic to see the raw and honest experiences of those living with spinal cord injury recognised in this way. We took creative risks, discussing topics often avoided—intimacy, trauma, fertility, identity, family planning—and did so with dignity and care.”
Gary who works as network support manager at SIA said: “For newly injured people often isolated, scared and unsure of their future, this podcast provided something no clinical leaflet or rehab session can offer: the chance to hear real voices, real challenges and real hope.”
The judges commented the podcast was a really worthwhile content series, which was tackled appropriately and delicately enough, without being patronising.
Spinal Injuries Association said: “We would like to thank all our amazing guests for talking so openly about often sensitive subject matters, and to all who have downloaded or streamed the podcast to date.
“This podcast brings more than the usual triumph over tragedy narrative that exists in many media outlets around spinal cord injury and reflects the truth often missing from public perception.
“Many people build fulfilled and ambitious lives despite the many barriers they face BUT only with the right support from family and charities like SIA connecting them to a lifetime of support.”
