The road to recovering lost or damaged functions can be long and arduous; and is likely to involve a cast of healthcare professionals in a range of settings. Optimising outcomes against the many complexities of post-stroke rehab – plus resource pressures and the disparate nature of some services – is a major UK healthcare challenge.
The progression of motor neurone disease can be cruelly fast. The last thing families affected by it need, then, are delays in getting the vital support they are entitled to. But in households across the UK, red tape and the stuttering mechanics of local councils are causing needless hold ups in essential home alterations. Ultimately, people with the disease are becoming trapped in unsuitable housing conditions, a new study has found.
Acquired brain injury (ABI) is one of the leading causes of disability within the UK and can have a significant impact on the daily lives of survivors and their families (Khan et al., 2003). Difficulties include physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioural changes, and with many experiencing little or no physical impairment, ABI is often referred to as a “silent epidemic”. Case management is dedicated to supporting and coordinating the rehabilitation and care of individuals with complex needs including ABI.
The platform, which enables home care providers to more efficiently manage and support their staff and oversee appointments, has gained its 1,000th customer. CarePlanner is a complete staff rostering and management system for domiciliary care providers, including those who support people with complex disabilities caused by brain and spinal injuries and neurological conditions. Users are able to realise significant efficiency savings on a wide range of tasks such as communicating with staff, monitoring mileage costs and booking appointments.
The team paired up with a specialist music therapy company, Chroma, to offer this expressive art therapy. It is one of many collaborative techniques the team use to support and encourage people recovering from brain injuries to improve their quality of life and regain their independence. Two of the residents,Louise*and Joe*, have worked with music therapist, Rachel Swanick from Chroma once a week for 11 weeks.
