Barnsley care home achieves quality assurance with HDA

Exemplar Health Care’s Dearnevale care home in Grimethorpe, Barnsley, is the latest care home to be Huntington’s Disease Association (HDA) Quality Assured.

The accreditation is a quality assurance programme that identifies the behaviours, cultures and specialist services required for a care home to specialise in caring for people living with Huntington’s disease.

From its development to launch, HDA Quality Assured puts people with Huntington’s disease and their loved ones at its heart.

Dearnevale is a specialist nursing home which supports up to 40 adults living with complex and high acuity needs. The home has been awarded the HDA Quality Assured tick after going through a rigorous process to meet the stands to pass the accreditation.

The accreditation scheme involves a system of self-assessment, observation and evidence gathering.

The judging process also saw HDA officials and an independent assessor spend time at the home. Colleagues at the home, families and service users were also interviewed.

Helen McGowan, home manager at Dearnevale, which is rated ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC, said: “Everyone who works at Dearnevale is delighted that the home is Quality Assured by the Huntington’s Disease Association.

“We are all passionate about providing the best quality of care for our service users who are living with Huntington’s disease, and supporting their families.

“I see, first hand, the outstanding care that our team provides every day. We’re proud that this has been acknowledged by the national charity, and honoured to have received the Quality Assured tick. It’s testament to the dedication and hard work of the outstanding team we have here at Dearnevale.”

The judging panel shared that Dearnevale demonstrated excellent care for people with Huntington’s disease.

Helen Santini, team leader – advisory service at the Huntington’s Disease Association, said: “Quality Assured is a rigorous assessment process that looks at Huntington’s disease specific standards in addition to Dearnevale’s excellent CQC reports.

“Dearnevale has met all nine quality standards which is testament to the care and support provided to residents and families.

“The accreditation will run for two years until 2024 and we hope that Dearnevale will reapply in the future in order to reassure potential customers that the service continues to the high standards that are currently provided.

“The Huntington’s Disease Association would like to congratulate Dearnevale on their success.

“The Quality Assured accreditation demonstrates the care home’s commitment to caring for people with Huntington’s disease and is a mark of reassurance to help the Huntington’s community when choosing a care facility.”
