ReEmerge raises US$37m to restore brain funcion after injury

ReEmerge has raised US$37m to fund a clinical study of its brain injury therapy in people with chronic moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury.

The Minnesota-based medtech company emerged from stealth on 15 September with an oversubscribed Series A financing.

Its Cognitive Network Restoration Therapy (CNRT) targets neural networks in the central thalamus, a brain region involved in attention, arousal and executive function.

The therapy is designed to stimulate underactive but viable neural circuits, aiming to reverse cognitive deficits years after an injury rather than bypass damaged pathways.

The technology is based on decades of research by Nicholas Schiff, professor of neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medicine, and colleagues at Stanford University and the University of Utah.

A pilot study found that patients regained cognitive function.

ReEmerge will use the funding for a prospective, single-arm, multicentre clinical trial assessing CNRT in traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The trial will enrol up to 40 patients with chronic moderate-to-severe TBI.

The funding will also support further technology development and expansion of the company’s clinical and regulatory operations.

US Venture Partners and Santé co-led the Series A round, with participation from Oxford Science Enterprises, 415 Capital, IAG Capital Partners, The Vertical Group and Dendrion Ventures.

Auriel August, principal at Santé, said: “CNRT could offer people living with TBI something they have too often been told not to expect, namely the possibility of meaningful cognitive recovery.”

Schiff said the goal is to help “many patients, who have historically had limited therapeutic options.”
