‘Small steps matter for reaching the stars’

Goal-setting in rehabilitation is vital, says Lisa Beaumont, whose own ongoing recovery from stroke is supported by the achievement of goals and the creation of new ones

Success in rehabilitation requires progress that can be shown by moving towards a goal.

My primary goal since my rehab journey began ten years ago has been to be able to walk without a stick.

Last month I completed 4,00 steps with my monopod to complete my March On challenge for Different Strokes. I received a certificate in recognition of my achievement.pastedGraphic.png

Meanwhile, Neuro ProActive has continued to get closer to its aim to benefit 12 million people in UK who live with neurological conditions by providing an approved patient-centric platform that empowers patients to manage their own recovery with their AHPs and support bubble equally involved to  help them.

Having completed my March challenge, I have been able to update my goals within the platform.

I have extended my goal to go beyond walking and include running with the approval of my physiotherapist, Jane Cast. While COVID restrictions remain in place, I have enjoyed sharing videos of my walking with her within the platform, so that she can review my progress.

I’m excited that this week I have had a hands-on physio session in my garden in full PPE. Jane took photographs of me in standing positions which she had guided me to correct. She will use those photos when she prescribes me new tasks within the platform next week.

We spoke about how I will be able to move forward with greater stamina, thanks to the March On challenge.

I was pleased to hear her assessment that my upper limb continues to improve, thanks to the daily input of massage by my support team at home. We can keep updated together via the new platform which will facilitate handover between my carers.

Jane reminded me that I must value small improvements on my journey of recovery, each small step will take me closer to my overall goals.  She uses this image to make her point. That small steps matter for reaching the stars.
