An event is being held to discuss the challenges facing case managers, clients and legal teams when individuals have the capacity to make decisions that impact on their rehabilitation and could involve litigation.
The British Association of Brain Injury and Complex Case Management (BABICM) is holding a one-day conference, ‘Decisions, decisions – the way forward: supporting capacitous choices in litigation and beyond’, to examine the issue.
The event will explore supporting clients with fluctuating capacity, employing care teams, making ‘unwise’ decisions, as well as decisions that young people face during times of transition into adulthood, and other challenging topics that are encountered on the road to recovery.
Professionals working throughout the neuro sector are expected to attend the conference which will be held on December 1 at The Principal in York.
Speakers will include:
- Gerard Martin, QC at Exchange Chambers;
- Patrick Boyd, case manager and safeguarding lead, Care and Case Management Services;
- Mobien Hussain, senior solicitor, Court of Protection, Irwin Mitchell;
- Dr David Todd, clinical neuropsychologist;
- Eilish Ferry Kennington, associate solicitor, Court of Protection, EMG Solicitors;
- David Hilton, partner and head of Court of Protection at CFG Law.
Vicki Gilman, chair of BABICM, said: “This will be a stimulating and very topical meeting.
“Clients make decisions which impact on their recovery, rehabilitation, lifestyle and relationships and can find there are associated legal implications and clinical challenges.
“It’s important that we understand these issues and manage them sensitively and appropriately.”
