Neuro-rehab professionals can now access a new training programme led by the UK’s National Rehabilitation Centre.
Opportunities to undertake Rehabilitation Medicine training alongside world-leading experts and using cutting-edge technology are now available at the NRC for resident doctors.
This is the first year that Specialist Trainees in the medical specialty of Rehabilitation Medicine (also called Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine PRM) embark on rotations at the pioneering National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) on their paths to become NHS consultants.
The NRC opens its doors to patients with complex rehabilitation needs in Summer 2025.
Professor Manoj Sivan, clinical research lead for the NRC, said: “The NRC is an ideal place for any new trainee because it provides all the specialist areas of rehabilitation under one roof.”
Dr Javvad Haider, head of clinical services at the NRC, explained that specialist trainees starting at ST3 level who select the East Midlands training programme will spend two years at the NRC.
They can expect: rotations on inpatient musculoskeletal rehab wards – the only place in the NHS to have dedicated MSK rehab beds under the care of rehab consultants; experience of working with a deconditioned cohort of patients including critical illness survivors, where we are exploring innovative rehabilitation interventions; and, hands-on experience of techniques such as ultrasound-guided injections, technology-based neuroplasticity interventions to stimulate areas of the brain, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, and advanced spasticity interventions.
Furthermore there will be opportunities to work at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, also on the Stanford Hall Estate where the NRC is co-located, research opportunities including working with and under supervision from Professor Sivan on specific clinical research projects, participating in the national BSPRM neurorehabilitation course delivered at the NRC, and training, education and CPD opportunities through the National NRC Academy.
