Professor of clinical neurology receives prestigious NIHR Senior Investigator award

University College London has confirmed that David Werring, professor of clinical neurology, brain repair and rehabilitation, of the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, has received a prestigious National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator award.

The NIHR Senior Investigator award celebrates senior researchers that are making an outstanding leadership contribution to the work of the organisation. NHIR Senior investigators act as ambassadors and help to shape research across social care, public health, and the NHS.

Each year, the NHIR provides funding across four years for Senior Investigators to support their research while they take on a senior leadership role within the organisation.

The NHIR has announced the appointment of 43 NIHR Senior Investigators in its most recent round of awards, including Professor Werring.

Professor David Werring said: “I’m truly delighted and honoured to be recognised in this way by NIHR, and look forward to working with colleagues in the NIHR Academy from across the country in promoting high quality research to improve patient outcomes within the NHS.”

Professor Werring is honorary consultant neurologist at the Stroke Research Centre, UCL Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), University College Hospitals (UCH) NHS Foundation Trust.

Contributing to delivering hyperacute and acute stroke care, Werring runs a specialist clinical service and research programme in intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel disease as well as being the head of the research department of Brain Repair and Rehabilitation at the Institute of Neurology, and chair of the Association of British Neurologists Stroke Advisory Group.

Werring is also stroke specialty lead for the NIHR North Thames Clinical Research Network and an expert advisor to the NICE centre for guidelines.

Professor Waljit Dhillo, Dean of NIHR Academy, said: “I look forward to working with our new and returning Senior Investigators over the next four years. These prestigious researchers are fundamental to NIHR, supporting our strategic priorities and providing visible leadership as NIHR ambassadors.”

Awardees receive £20,000 a year to fund activities that support their research, and are expected to contribute significantly to NIHR as a senior leader, lead the training and development of NIHR’s people, be NIHR ambassadors, demonstrate research excellence, contribute to national growth, and champion the integration of Patient and Public Involvement in research.
