Lucy’s story – Four weeks to freedom: A Guillain-Barré recovery journey

By CHD Living

At CHD Living, we believe rehabilitation is about more than recovery – it’s about restoring independence, dignity and purpose.

Our specialist centres in Bagshot and Kingston are designed to deliver transformative outcomes for people recovering from complex neurological conditions.

One such story is Lucy’s.

When 31-year-old Lucy walked out of Bagshot Park Neurorehabilitation Centre after just four weeks, she did so unaided – physically stronger, mentally steadier, and emotionally empowered.

It’s hard to imagine that only a month earlier, she had arrived with significant bilateral weakness, barely able to stand.

Her diagnosis: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).

A rare and frightening condition, GBS had swept in fast. Within days of experiencing weakness and numbness, Lucy was in intensive care, ventilated and fitted with a tracheostomy.

She was critically unwell. But she was also fiercely determined.

Previously fit and working at Basingstoke College, and mother to a one-year-old, Lucy’s priority was getting back to her young family – and she wanted to do it in a calmer, more personalised setting. That’s where CHD Living’s Bagshot Park team stepped in.

On arrival to Bagshot Park, Lucy was completely dependent. Maximum assistance was needed for movement, fatigue was overwhelming, and her confidence had been severely shaken. What followed was a remarkable example of person-centred, evidence-led rehabilitation.

Physiotherapists worked intensively on core strength, mobility and stamina. By the end of her stay, Lucy had progressed to walking independently, with a near-perfect Berg Balance score of 55/56.

Occupational therapy reintroduced her to the rhythms of daily life – dressing, cooking, caring for herself.

Within weeks, Lucy was once again independent in her personal care.

Meanwhile, our clinical psychology team helped Lucy process her trauma, manage anxiety and regain emotional resilience – laying the groundwork for sustainable recovery at home.

Lucy’s discharge after just four weeks was ahead of all expectations – but in line with CHD Living’s goal-focused approach. She left our care not only walking but confident, empowered and ready to embrace life with her family again.

Her story is a testament to what’s possible when rehabilitation is personalised, collaborative and delivered by a skilled multidisciplinary team.

At CHD Living, we’re proud to be an NHS-preferred provider of complex rehabilitation – helping people like Lucy transform challenges into comebacks.
