Beyond the therapy session: Introducing RMR Rehabilitation Support Workers Ltd

By Rowan Morgan-Ruffley

Rehabilitation does not stop when a therapy session ends.

For someone rebuilding their life following a brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation or other complex condition, much of the real work of rehabilitation happens at home and in the community.

It happens when someone tries to prepare a meal, get back to the shops, become more physically active, use public transport or regain the confidence to participate in everyday life.

This is the space RMR Rehabilitation Support Workers Ltd was created to support.

Bridging the gap

There can be a significant gap between what someone achieves during a clinical therapy session and their ability to carry that progress into everyday life.

A physiotherapist might provide an exercise programme. An occupational therapist may identify functional goals. The wider multidisciplinary team may develop a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.

But what happens between those appointments?

Our Rehabilitation Support Workers work directly with clients in their homes and communities, helping them practise and implement the programmes and recommendations established by their treating professionals.

The aim is not to replace therapy. It is to help carry rehabilitation into everyday life.

That might involve supporting a prescribed exercise programme, but it could equally mean going shopping, preparing a meal, gardening, attending an exercise class or gradually building the confidence to access the community again.

These may appear to be everyday activities, but for someone rebuilding their independence they can represent significant rehabilitation milestones.

Support with a purpose

RMR was founded by Maria Lewis, Neuro Specialist Physiotherapist, and Rowan Morgan-Ruffley, Senior Manager Practitioner CIMSPA and Personal Trainer, bringing together clinical rehabilitation and physical activity expertise.

We believe there is an important difference between simply doing something for someone and supporting them to regain the confidence and ability to participate themselves.

Our Rehabilitation Support Workers therefore work towards the individual’s rehabilitation goals, within clearly defined professional boundaries and with clinical oversight.

Ultimately, rehabilitation should be about more than what someone can achieve during an appointment.

It should be about what that progress enables them to do in their own life.

Greater confidence. Greater participation. Greater independence.

That is what we want RMR Rehabilitation Support Workers Ltd to help make possible.

Because rehabilitation shouldn’t end when the therapy session does.
