Brain injury rehab service saved after review

A brain injury service in East Anglia that was scheduled to be scrapped due to cost cutting has been saved.

Last July, it was announced that NHS Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board (ICB) would not be renewing its contract for rehab services with Shaftesbury Icanho (formerly Livability Icanho).

The specialist provider at Bungay, Suffolk, supports around 40 clients. Its scheduled closure came amid financial pressures faced by the NHS trust.

But after seeking “additional information and feedback”, reports the BBC, the ICB has informed the provider that the contract can continue for a further 12 months.

Shaftesbury Icanho’s executive director jane Percy said: “This satellite service provides a lifeline to people in Waveney when they need it most.

“We are thrilled to hear that this service can resume and once again serve people in the Waveney area who will be able to benefit from the same specialist service as other Suffolk residents.

“There is simply no other provision that matches the work locally, supporting complex neuro-rehab cases via a highly specialist multi-disciplinary approach.”

NHS Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board (ICB) said: “Following additional information and feedback, we have extended the Livability Icanho contract to December 2025.

“This extension allows us to further review service provision across the system, speak with patients, carers and professionals, and explore future options which provide quality care and value for money for people in Norfolk and Waveney.”
