NCM UK: First-class case management services for a broad range of conditions

Since its launch in 2010, NCM UK has expanded its offering to support individuals with a wide range of conditions on their journey to recovery and improved quality of life.

When Martin Gascoigne founded NCM UK he knew he wanted to draw on his experience as a social worker to specialise in case management for those with brain injuries.

But since its inception, the organisation has steadily expanded its scope and expertise in the field of neurorehabilitation.

What began as a dedication to brain injury rehabilitation evolved when Martin and his team recognised a critical overlap: many individuals suffering from brain injuries also experience spinal injuries.

The complexities of treating dual conditions led to the expansion of their services, ensuring that clients receive the full spectrum of care required for their recovery.

An increasing number of paediatric referrals also prompted NCM UK to extend its services to children, making their expertise available to clients across all age groups.

NCM UK’s client base now spans a wide range of conditions, from organic to traumatic brain injuries, as well as various spinal injuries, including complete spinal cord separation and partial damage that can result in life-altering effects such as paralysis.

As each condition requires a tailored rehabilitation approach, NCM UK’s team of specialists is carefully selected to meet the specific needs of every individual.

Some examples of the conditions supported include:

  • Encephalitis

Inflammation of the brain, typically caused by a viral infection, with symptoms ranging from mild, flu-like signs to severe neurological issues such as seizures, confusion, or even loss of consciousness.

  • Stroke (including Ischaemic Stroke, Hemorrhagic Stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack)

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients.

This can lead to brain cells dying and can cause sudden weakness, paralysis, speech difficulties, and cognitive impairments, depending on the area of the brain affected.

  • Brain haemorrhage

Also known as intracranial haemorrhage, this is a type of stroke caused by bleeding within the brain due to a ruptured blood vessel or trauma.

The pressure from the leaked blood can damage brain cells, leading to symptoms like headaches, weakness, seizures, or loss of consciousness.

  • Tumour

Tumours can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Depending on their location and size, brain tumours can cause a variety of symptoms, including headaches, seizures, vision problems, and changes in personality or cognitive function.

  • Quadriplegia

Quadriplegia is paralysis of all four limbs—both arms and legs—typically resulting from a spinal cord injury at the neck level.

This condition can significantly impair movement and sensation below the site of the injury and may affect other bodily functions, such as breathing and bladder control.

  • Paraplegia

Paraplegia is paralysis of the lower half of the body, affecting both legs.

It is usually caused by a spinal cord injury below the chest. Individuals with paraplegia may lose movement and sensation in their legs and lower body, but their upper body function remains intact.

Expertise at every stage of recovery

NCM UK’s rehabilitation process begins with a dedicated team of therapists, each an expert in their own field.

These teams are carefully matched to the client’s needs, ensuring that every aspect of their recovery is addressed with precision and care.

For example, clients with conditions like encephalitis, stroke, or brain haemorrhage require different therapeutic approaches than those with quadriplegia or paraplegia.

NCM UK’s multidisciplinary teams include:

  • Speech & Language Therapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Hydrotherapists
  • Dieticians
  • Neuro Psychologists and Neuro Psychiatrists
  • Specialist Nurses

These professionals work collaboratively to design and implement individualised rehabilitation programs, incorporating specialised equipment and ongoing assessments to track progress.

Nationwide reach with local expertise and professional governance

As NCM UK’s reputation has grown, so has its client base, now encompassing regions across England and Wales.

To maintain its high standards of care it has established a nationwide panel of specialists, trusted professionals who have previously collaborated with NCM UK, ensuring consistent high quality and effective therapeutic interventions regardless of the client’s location.

NCM UK’s commitment to excellence is further reinforced through affiliations with various professional governing bodies, including the recently established Institute of Registered Case Managers (IRCM).

These partnerships guarantee that, even in areas where their panel may not be located, clients still receive care that meets the highest regulated standards.

Looking to the future

NCM UK is not resting on its laurels; the company is actively working towards achieving CQC registration, a milestone that will enhance their ability to meet clients’ needs and adhere to ever-evolving standards of practice.

This pursuit of continuous improvement reflects NCM UK’s unwavering dedication to providing the best possible outcomes for their clients.

“The future of NCMUK is bright,” says Martin.

“We reinvest each year to ensure that we continue to grow and expand our infrastructure and client base, providing the very highest standard of case management and rehabilitation for clients with brain and spinal injuries going forward into the next chapter of our journey.”

Referrals can be made via the website and you can find NCM UK listed on various professional case management sites, including the IRCM.
