Parliamentary reception highlights brain injury to MPs

Professionals working in the field of brain injury joined survivors and charity representatives at a Parliamentary reception to highlight to Members of Parliament the urgent need for change.

Around 60 MPs from across the House and representing constituencies across the country attended the event to hear from professionals and brain injury survivors alike to discover more about the improvements that need to be made.

The event, which was spearheaded by UKABIF and saw its trustees and members attend, encouraged attendees to invite their own MP along, so they could hear the first-hand accounts of why care and support provision needs to increase, and why the ABI Strategy is so important.

The impending ABI Strategy, currently in development and chaired by Sir Chris Bryant MP, will help to address vital issues affecting survivors and their families and has consulted widely in understanding the challenges that exist in provision nationally.

The Strategy is set to be unveiled in the summer, and Sir Chris, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on ABI, updated on its progress at the event.

“To see so many people come along is amazing. I have been involved in this for a long time and we want to put together a single strategy for the whole of Government on Acquired Brain Injury,” he said.

“In doing so, there is the recognition that there is an issue to deal with as a whole Government.

“We have 1.4 million people in the UK, if not more, living with a brain injury and we want anyone, regardless of age or postcode, to be able to live the best life possible.”

Chloe Hayward, executive director at UKABIF, said: “A huge thank you to everyone who made the journey to attend the reception.

“The huge response is testament to the will to improve the lives of people living with an ABI. Your voices were heard and we will continue to press for change.”
