Work is underway to expand post-brain injury care facilities in Wiltshire.

The Avalon Centre, in Swindon and operated by Elysium Healthcare, is being expanded with a new rehab centre, new wards, bungalows, a café and occupation therapy rooms.

The site is currently has a single storey, 20 bed building, set in two acres of private gardens.

It was designed specifically to support people who, because of their injury, have challenging and complex needs and require a neuro-rehab programme.

Elysium said the development would allow patients to “stay on site longer” as they “improve and progress through to the different levels of rehabilitation”, the BBC reports.

Council planners signed off the expansion last week and construction is now under way.

A spokesperson for the centre said the space would allow it to offer much more “integrated therapy”.

“The services offered at The Avalon Centre are much needed for people who have been left with unwanted behaviours and complex needs,” they said.

“Patients will also be able to stay on site longer as they improve and progress through to the different levels of rehabilitation.”
