On Wednesday 21 August, York Central MP Rachael Maskell visited Woodlands Neurological Rehabilitation Centre, part of the Active Care Group, to learn about the centre’s neuro-rehabilitation services.
The visit was an opportunity for Rachael to meet with Service Director David Williams and discuss Woodlands’ programmes, the evolving landscape of healthcare, and future developments aimed at improving patient outcomes.
During the visit, Rachael and David explored the various services offered at Woodlands, focusing on key areas of growth and innovation, including:
- Tracheostomy care: A specialised service that improves quality of life for patients with complex respiratory needs.
- Quality of life enhancements: Strategies that ensure patients are supported in ways that improve their overall wellbeing during rehabilitation.
- Neural Pathways and high-tech physiotherapy: How Active Care Group’s company, Neural Pathways, helps provide the latest advancements in neurological rehabilitation, including cutting-edge technologies used to stimulate and support recovery.
- Future outpatient and respite services: Plans for Woodlands’ future offerings for outpatient care and respite services for individuals with neurological conditions, further increasing accessibility to essential care.
The conversation also delved how the new Labour government is poised to improve health systems.
Additionally, they discussed the importance of effective regulation that enhances care delivery across the board.
As part of the visit, Rachael was given a tour of the Woodlands facilities, including a closer look at some of the physiotherapy equipment currently on loan and being trialled from Neural Pathways.
This high-tech equipment is designed to support and enhance neuro-rehabilitation, providing patients with access to state-of-the-art health technologies.
Reflecting on her visit, Rachael Maskell said, “It was good to learn of the developments which are taking place at Woodlands.
“Patients, mainly funded by the NHS, are able to access state-of-the-art health technologies to assist with assessment and therapeutic approaches in neuro-rehabilitation, exciting innovations developed since I worked as a physiotherapist in the NHS.
“This rehabilitation unit explained how it was able to take patients out of York Hospital to free up beds while providing specialist and intensive rehab to patients.
“I was shown round the extensive grounds on the site, which could support further health interventions for this patient group.
“All patients should be able to access the very best of care.”
Service Director, David Williams, added: “It was an absolute pleasure to have Rachael visit, to be able to show her the service and discuss the future developments at Woodlands.
“It was also hugely refreshing and exciting to hear how important patient care, effective funding and regulation are at the focus of the government’s national and local initiatives in supporting the best health services for the future.”
