Fourier extends partnership with Barrow Neurological Institute

Rehab robotics unicorn Fourier Intelligence is continuing to lead the way in the sector through strengthening its partnership with the world’s biggest neurological research institution.

Fourier signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Barrow Neurological Institute in 2019 to work jointly towards advancing rehabilitation technology and maximising the potential of rehab robotics.

Now, the collaboration has been extended even further with the signing of a new MoU.

The renewal will further strengthen the relationship between Fourier and Barrow Neurological Institute to continue working closely together on current and future research and development.

“This MoU builds on an already strong relationship with Barrow Neurological Institute,” said Zen Koh, co-founder and Global Hub CEO of Fourier.

“We look forward to continue providing them with our assistance in their research through our intelligent robotic rehabilitation devices as well as other additional support.”

The relationship with Barrow Neurological Institute, also one of the leading neurosurgical training centres in the US, forms a key part in Fourier’s strategy of forming collaborations with international leaders in their field, to help develop new world-leading innovative solutions to benefit patients’ lives.

Barrow Neurological Institute is currently conducting research with Arizona State University to evaluate the efficacy of robotics and conventional therapy in the rehabilitation of acute stroke patients using the pioneering Fourier Intelligence’s ArmMotus™ M2 Gen.

“Both Fourier and Barrow Neurological Institute care greatly about rehabilitation and aspire to advance rehabilitation technology,” added Zen Koh.

“We have been working closely with them since 2019 and we have seen tremendous progress in the clinical application area. We are truly grateful for this understanding.”

Trent Maruyama, program manager for rehabilitation technology at Barrow Neurological Institute, said: “We have had nothing but very positive results throughout the previous collaboration and I am very excited to achieve more in the upcoming years to further advance the science and technology in rehabilitation.

“The main thing we are trying to achieve from this new collaboration is to push the limitation of rehabilitation robotics.

“Combining Fourier’s science and engineering capabilities with the clinical skillset from Barrow Neurological Institute, we believe that it is the perfect match to push the boundaries in bringing rehabilitation robotics to the next level.”

The new MoU was signed in a virtual ceremony led by Zen Koh and Trent Maruyama, with Fourier Intelligence’s general manager, Owen Teoh; senior manager for clinical application and research, Sarah Lim; and clinical consultants for Oceania and North America, Taya Hamilton and Daniela Mattos, also in attendance.
