Meet the warriors in combat with Parkinson’s disease

Mellisa McConaghy is one of Australia’s leading neuro physiotherapists, who noticed that there was a lack of effective exercise and rehab programmes for those with Parkinson’s.

In 2013, McConaghy launched PD Warrior which “uses the principles of neuroplasticity and retraining the brain exercises that help slow down the progression of Parkinson’s symptoms.”

Here NR Times speaks to McConaghy on the inspiration behind PD Warrior, how they combat Parkinson’s and where you can find them.

On her inspiration for starting PD Warrior, McConaghy says: “My Grandad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. I knew there had to be more available to improve the lives of people living with Parkinson’s.

“I also knew that knew neuroplasticity and Parkinson’s specific exercises had a big role to play.

PD Warrior does not only provide services to those with Parkinson’s, they also provide courses for health professionals.

On these courses, McConaghy says: “Each course gives health professionals the skills and education to confidently work with, and improve the lives of Parkinson’s patients.”

Combatting Parkinson’s

“PD Warrior offers a range of programs to slow Parkinson’s symptoms.”

From a library of online videos, which is filled with hundreds of specific Parkinson’s disease exercises, to practical sessions, such as the 10 Week Challenge, PD Warrior has a lot to offer.

On the 10 Week Challenge McConaghy says: “It is an intensive exercise program that delivers the biggest impact on people recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

“It’s designed to slow Parkinson’s symptoms and build strong exercise habits.

“It is available online or in person at a PD Warrior facility.

“It is an ideal option for anyone wanting to get back in to peak physical and mental condition and to get back to or improve activities.”

McConaghy also highlights what PD Warrior can offer to professionals “We also offers four levels of courses for health professionals”

“Courses are a combination of online learning and face-to-face practical sessions.

“They focus on managing newly diagnosed patients through to later stages of Parkinson’s and are valuable for any health professional wanting to improve their knowledge and confidence around Parkinson’s.”

A global mission

On where to find PD Warrior, McConaghy says: “We are available in Over 60 licensed locations globally, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Spain and Switzerland.

“All programs are available online and accessible from a mobile device or computer.”
