A Parkinson’s technology company has secured a €317,762 EU grant to extend its monitoring algorithms to third-party wearable devices.
InSignals Neurotech will use the funding to enable its proprietary algorithms to operate remotely through devices including smartwatches and smart rings.
The development aims to support continuous monitoring of Parkinson’s disease outside clinical settings.
The Portugal-based company is also launching a mobile application to help patients and carers monitor symptoms and improve communication with clinicians.
The work is funded by an earlier grant from the PRR Green Vouchers programme.
The company is currently conducting a seed fundraising round to support medical regulatory compliance and international expansion.
InSignals said its technology had been tested in more than 200 patients through an international multi-centre clinical study.
The company holds patents covering methods for measuring rigidity.
It was established as a spin-out from the Portuguese Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science, with support from São João University Hospital.
Frontier IP Group, which announced the award, holds a 32.9 per cent equity stake in InSignals.
João Paulo Cunha, co-founder and chief science officer of InSignals, said the funding would allow the company to take its algorithms beyond specialist clinical settings and into everyday wearable devices.
The €317,762 grant was awarded through the NORTE 2030 programme under the EU-backed Portugal 2030 framework.
The framework supports Portugal’s economic, social and territorial development, with a focus on innovation and digital technologies.
