Breakthrough’s Holly Luxton on joining the VRA and the value of vocational rehabilitation

Senior Case Manager and Specialist OT, Holly Luxton, explains why Breakthrough have joined the Vocational Rehabilitation Association…

At Breakthrough, we believe that recovery is about more than just rehabilitation—it’s about rebuilding lives.

That’s why I’m delighted that we have joined the Vocational Rehabilitation Association (VRA), strengthening our commitment to supporting individuals on their journey back to work and independence.

The VRA is a multi-disciplinary UK-wide organisation supporting and promoting all those working in vocational rehabilitation and commissioning services whether in the public, private, voluntary or third sector.

As a Specialist Occupational Therapist and Senior Case Manager here at Breakthrough, I see firsthand how important vocational rehabilitation is in the journey of those recovering from life-changing injuries.

Returning to work—or finding new, meaningful opportunities—is a vital part of regaining confidence, financial security, and a sense of purpose and, as such, is a crucial aspect of a case manager’s role.

At Breakthrough, we are fortunate to have a team of highly experienced Occupational Therapists who bring a wealth of expertise in vocational rehabilitation.

Our combined knowledge allows us to aid our wider case management team to provide specialist, client-centred support, ensuring that individuals can re-engage with work or meaningful activity in a way that is sustainable and fulfilling.

By becoming a member of the VRA, we are further enhancing our expertise in vocational rehabilitation best practices, collaborating with industry professionals to drive better outcomes for our clients and advocating for inclusive, client-centred return-to-work strategies.

We know that clinical case management isn’t just about medical care—it’s about the whole person.

Vocational rehab considers physical, cognitive, and psychological aspects, ensuring that work goals align with a client’s abilities and limitations.

For many of our clients, especially those recovering from catastrophic injuries or chronic conditions, returning to work or finding meaningful activity is a key milestone.

Vocational rehabilitation helps them regain a sense of purpose, financial stability, and self-sufficiency.

When it comes to reducing long-term disability, experience shows that early intervention in vocational rehab can improve outcomes and reduce the risk of permanent job loss.

We know that, by facilitating a structured return-to-work plan, case managers can help prevent long-term disability and dependency on benefits.

But it’s more than that.

Unemployment or forced career changes due to injury can lead to depression, anxiety, and loss of identity.

Vocational rehabilitation provides clients with confidence, social engagement, and motivation to move forward.

A huge part of our role as case managers is advocating for our clients, working with employers, healthcare providers, therapists and insurers and coordinating these entities to work together to ensure the necessary support and funding is in place, implementing reasonable job modifications or even new career pathways that suit the client’s evolving capabilities.

Ultimately, vocational rehabilitation is about helping clients rebuild their lives beyond their injury or illness.

It’s not just about returning to work—it’s about reclaiming independence, dignity, and a fulfilling future.

Our commitment to this can only be further strengthened by our alignment with the aims of the VRA.
