Stroke survivor shares his remarkable story of recovery

Stroke survivor Stu opens up about his recovery at Circle Rehabilitaion in Birmingham

On the 1st of April 2025, Stuart, a much-loved Paramedic Operations Manager with the West Midlands Ambulance Service, collapsed at the gym after suffering a stroke.

At just 50 years old, fit, healthy, and full of life, it came as a huge shock to everyone who knows him.

Thanks to a quick-thinking off-duty nurse and his ambulance colleagues, Stu was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where doctors discovered that he had three strokes.

The effects were serious. Stuart’s speech and movement on the left side were badly impacted and for a week, he was critically ill.

His wife, Emma, was told he might not survive.

But anyone who knows Stu knows he’s a fighter.

Against all odds, he pulled through and has started his recovery journey.

He spent more than 16 weeks at Circle Rehabilitation, working with the team on his strength, balance, and mobility— and showed massive improvement along the way.
